How to Have a "Good Divorce"

This week (10-15 November 2025) marks Good Divorce Week, an annual campaign led by Resolution, aimed at promoting a constructive and child-focused approach to separation and divorce. At Heringtons Solicitors, we understand that even when separation is the right decision, it can still be an emotional and difficult time. A “good divorce” doesn’t mean it’s easy - but it does mean handling the process with dignity, cooperation and care for everyone involved.

Here are some of our top tips to help you through:

1. Focus on Communication

Try to keep communication as open and respectful as possible. This can prevent misunderstandings and reduce conflict, particularly where children are involved. If direct discussion is too difficult, your solicitor can help you find a way to communicate safely and effectively.

2. Prioritise the Children

A good divorce puts children first. Keep their needs and wellbeing at the centre of your decisions and avoid involving them in adult disagreements. Stability and reassurance go a long way towards helping children adapt to changes.

3. Get the Right Legal Advice Early

Understanding your rights and options from the outset can make all the difference. Early advice helps you plan ahead and avoid unnecessary stress or expense. A good solicitor will guide you through the process, explain things clearly, and help you make informed choices.

4. Consider Alternatives to Court

Where possible, consider mediation, collaborative law, or solicitor-led negotiation to resolve issues without going to court. These approaches can be quicker, more cost-effective, and less adversarial, helping everyone move forward in a more positive way.

5. Look After Yourself

Divorce is not just a legal process - it’s a life transition. Taking care of your emotional and physical wellbeing is just as important. Support from friends, family, or professionals can help you manage the journey with greater resilience.
