What's Happening?

Go Hastings Wanderers Under 8s!

What an absolutely cracking game of football between the Hastings Wanderers Under 8’s Lions and Hastings Athletic. Goals galore at a 7-7 draw! 5 goals for Tom (pictured right below) and some wonderful defending from Adam (left). This team will do us very proud we're sure.   Can’t wait for the season  to start soon and we wish everyone good luck.

Meet the Team - Fran Hayward - a Kentish connection!

Fran is our Kentish connection here at Heringtons. She grew up in a village on the border of Dartford, Gravesend and Sevenoaks and would go exploring the countryside, which in parts overlooked Canary Wharf in London, on her mischievous pony Rock Steady (who was anything but!)

Attending schools in Longfield and Wilmington Fran went on to the University of Kent in Canterbury where she took a joint honours degree in Law and Psychology, but travelled back and forth between Canterbury and Dartford so she could see her horses (and if she was lucky, get her washing done at the same time!)

However Fran’s maternal family originate from Ashford where they farmed the land and where, as a young woman, her grandmother would regularly “borrow” her brother’s motorbike. It’s no wonder really that she married a motorbike racer!

Fran herself has now returned to her roots and is living in the same village as her great-grandparents did back in the late 19th Century, and regularly walks past the old family home whilst walking the dog.

She commutes daily across the border into East Sussex where she works at our Rye High Street office as a lawyer in our Private Client department.

Fran specialises in estate administration, Will drafting, Powers of Attorney, trusts, taxation and Court of Protection work.   Fran uses her analytical approach to ensure that her clients are prepared for the future.  More about Fran here

Hastings 1066  Community Awards - Carer of the Year 2019-20 - Frances Phillips

We were so honoured to sponsor the Carer of the Year award at the Hastings 1066 Community Awards ceremony and our Sally Kinsey, Partner and Project Group Leader of our Private Client department, very much enjoyed presenting Frances Phillips with the award at Bannatynes, Hastings on Thursday 6 June.  Frances has been a volunteer for more than ten years with two key support agencies, The Seaview Project, a day care centre, and Turner House, a residential home for single mothers, both located in St Leonards-on-Sea.  As a volunteer, she collected valuable clothes and household goods for these two projects.  Although Frances now resides in Surrey, she lived in Hastings from 1940 to 1960 and was educated at schools in the county. Her family still live here and the residents of the two projects are all local people. Frances visits Hastings most weeks when she drives from her home to deliver clothing to the two projects. Frances has been visiting and bringing donations to Turner House for more than 15 years. This includes her very popular homemade marmalade.  Always visiting with a smile, it is said that she brings such happiness with her - even through the difficult times in her own life.  Perhaps best summed up by the words of one fellow volunteer "Words cannot express how much we appreciate Frances - she is truly wonderful.”

What a fabulous end to our working month in January when our Family Law solicitor Charlotte Hustwayte attended the official Admission Ceremony to mark her entrance to the Roll of Solicitors at The Law Society Hall in Chancery Lane, London. Charlotte was joined by her family for the auspicious occasion followed by a celebratory meal afterwards at The Ivy. Congratulations again Charlotte!  Photo here

Quality assured by our Elderly & Vulnerable Client Services Team!

Tracey May, Vulnerable Client Services Executive

20/03/19

Following a routine Quality Assurance Visit this week by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), we were thrilled to receive excellent feedback about our Elderly and Vulnerable Client Services Team who look after our most vulnerable clients throughout our five offices. The OPG Officer was very thorough in assessing three of our client files which included reviewing our records, practices and procedures, meeting our clients in their own home and speaking to Care Staff. All outside agencies and care staff reported our Team were excellent and were very responsive to requests or queries.

Vulnerable Client Services Executive Tracey May commented “We strive always to provide the best possible service and outcomes for all our clients at all times and am delighted with the initial feedback from our recent inspection”.

International Women's Day 2019

International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate the achievements of women. What better way to show our support of #IWD2019 than with a photograph of our wonderful Litigation Team. With Nikki Coward (Partner) and Natalie Jones (Head of the Family Department) at the helm, the team boasts a group of strong, intelligent and driven women.#BalanceforBetter

Dementia Friendly Reception at Heringtons

Our five branch reception teams met up recently for a dementia awareness session run by Sharon Sellens from Rye & District Dementia Action Alliance.   One of our goals as a firm is to actively look at ways to ensure our reception and meeting room areas at all our branches are made as "dementia-friendly" as possible - with Sharon's help we have started towards that goal.  https://tinyurl.com/y68davwt

Our charity partnership

We are proud to be supporting Care for the Carers for the second year.  Up against tough competition from some other very worthwhile local charities, Care for the Carers, received the most staff votes from our Charity of the Year poll in 2018.

Care for the Carers is the Carers Centre for East Sussex and an independent charity supporting unpaid carers across the county. The charity provides free practical and emotional advice and a range of services such as counselling, support groups and training. www.cftc.org.uk

Richard Fisher, Managing Partner said “Everyone at Heringtons is excited to be working alongside Care for the Carers this coming year to show our support and to help highlight the wonderful work the charity does for all the communities in our branch towns.”  Jennifer Twist, Chief Executive at Care for the Carers is equally delighted: "We are absolutely thrilled to be the Heringtons Charity of the Year, and look forward to working with its fantastic team over the coming months. Heringtons’ support will help us to raise funds to make a difference to local carers’ lives, and also to raise awareness of the massive contribution that carers make to communities across East Sussex," she says.

"With diminishing public funding for support to carers and the vulnerable people they support, it's especially important for high-profile, supportive local businesses to recognise unpaid carers in this way. And with Heringtons operating across East Sussex, from offices located in Battle, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Hastings, and Rye, we’re so pleased to have their support to reach even more of the 65,000 unpaid carers across the county.”

Throughout the past year colleagues and have been fundraising in a variety of ways for the charity and this year as Care for the Carers celebrate their 30th anniversary fundraising and awareness support continues.  For further information on the work of the charity visit www.cftc.org.uk
