This April marks National Pet Month and we thought others would be interested to learn how our busy Conveyancing Secretary (and mum!) Lynda Humphrey-Stack spends her spare time helping the animals she loves so much!
"I love my animals (particularly cats!) and have fostered dogs for various rescues for quite a few years now. I have now gone one step further and in January this year I became a Director, founder and owner of a Sussex based cat and dog rescue! With the assistance of a few others whom I have worked with in rescue we decided to “go it alone” and Paws And Whiskers Sussex (P.A.W.S) was born.
We rescue both cats and dogs from overseas (currently Romania) and here in the UK. The majority of our cats and dogs from Romania lived on the streets or have been abandoned by their owners before being transported to the UK where they are placed in the care of one of my fabulous foster families (I manage a team of just over 50 foster families) where they are assessed before being placed for rehoming. Most of our UK cats are dogs are surrendered to us by their owners who for whatever reason can no longer keep them – this is a growing issue currently as a lot of people who took on a ‘lockdown pet’ are now finding they cannot keep them as things start to adjust to slowly returning to some sort of normality.
In just under 3 months we have taken 19 dogs and 12 cats into our care and have completed 10 adoptions. We have raised thousands of pounds through fundraising to ensure that every animal that comes into our care has a full health check and are given any necessary veterinary treatment so that they are the healthiest and happiest they can be before they go to their forever homes.
This is our first P.A.W.S cat Cassie.
She came into foster with me after being surrendered by her owners as they simply did not want her. She was malnourished, underweight and had an awful skin condition as was covered head to tail in scabs. I am a sucker for cats and when Cassie arrived I already had 11 of my own! Well, that has now become 12 as it was clear from the moment that Cassie arrived that she was where she belonged. Despite her neglect, she is the most sweetest, loving and vocal cat. She has now put on weight and her skin has healed completely and she is a much loved member of our family.
Owning and running an animal rescue has been a life dream of mine and something I never thought would be possible. I am overwhelmed by the support that we have received thus far and am incredibly proud of everything we have achieved to date."
